The long search for a Die Hard 5 director appears to be over, as Fox chooses the helmsman behind Max Payne and The Omen remake for the job.

We’ve known for some time that Bruce Willis is hoping to make a fifth Die Hard movie, but his search for a suitable director has dragged on for a surprisingly long time. Noam Murro was originally slated to direct Die Hard 5, but he dropped out of the project in favour of the 300 sequel, Battle Of Artemisia.

With Murro out of the picture, Fox and Willis then began looking for a replacement, and their list of possible candidates is surprisingly eclectic, and apparently included Fast Five’s Justin Lin, Attack The Block’s Joe Cornish, and Drive’s Nicolas Winding Refn.

From a personal point of view, I’d love to see Refn direct a Die Hard movie – he’d bring a properly stylish, unusual and potentially savage edge to the franchise. It seems, though, that Fox has chosen a dependable yet slightly less left-field director for John McLane’s next adventure – he’s John Moore, who was behind such movies as Behind Enemy Lines, Flight Of The Phoenix, The Omen and Max Payne.

Willis was apparently impressed by Moore’s love of the Die Hard movies, and also, as Dead Line put it, “his grasp of how to shoot practical, non-CGI-heavy action scenes”. We seem to recall their being quite a bit of CG in the fourth Die Hard, but we’ll let that slide.

It’s said that Die Hard 5 will be shot in Russia, with a budget of around $100 million.

More news on the sequel as we get it.
