90s action classic Point Break is getting the remake treatment, it's been confirmed. More details here.

Well, crikey. We’re long past the point of proclaiming ‘is nothing sacred’ when a new remake is announced, but it’s still a little bit depressing when a film that still holds up today is chosen for a second pass.

This time, we’re talking about Point Break, the Keanu Reeves-Patrick Swayze action thriller, directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The film is 20 years old, and it’s been announced that Alcon has picked up the rights to the project.

Kurt Wimmer, who penned the recent new take on Total Recall, has written the screenplay for this one, and in the words of the official statement from Alcon Entertainment, “The film is being fast tracked, with the filmmakers set to take the project out to directors soon”.

As for the angle of the new film, the firm said that “The new version is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring, but plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers.”

Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are then attributed with saying “Who doesn’t love the Kathryn Bigelow original and its pure heart-pounding action and thrills?”

Well, you two for starters, by the sounds of it.

Television and gaming rights are also included in the deal, which presumably also ends, on a brighter note, the possibility of Point Break 2 (which Jan De Bont was, at one point, linked with directing).

When we find out any more on the project, we’ll reluctantly bring you the details. Why not relive the original instead, though?
