World Alert - Global Warming is Changing the World??
Despite the development in technology and lifestyle, why is it that the dilemma with global warming is so far a big concern? And with the severe climate conditions and varying environmental patterns, why are the exact specifics on global warming still being undecided? Three decades back, global warming was deemed as a joke. However nowadays, the side has enormously changed. Global warming is no

Childhood development Overview
During childhood development, one type of conduct which is characteristically seen is op positional behavior. Op positional behavior is expressed through disobedient, markedly defiant language, tendency to argue with the parents, or simply ignores the parents' word. It is most frequently seen in children below the age of ten years old. This kind of behavior is acceptable until it gets too extreme

Monday's Music Moves Me ~ One-Named Singers
OMG
Sup ya'll?? A LOT has happened since the last post, up to and including marriage and a ton of meals! I'm feeling a bit rusty but I've had a few things catch my eye lately and I can't resist sharing them.
First off is this great-sounding recipe that I StumbledUpon (if you don't know what that is, sign up immediately and prepare to be addicted) that I can't wait to try. Straight from The Pastry Affair blog, it's Garlic Parmesan Pull-Apart Bread and it sounds amazing. You can skip through the entire article which goes on about dry pancakes and whatnot, but in the end I can't help but anticipate this tasting like a savory version of my mother's fantastic monkey pull apart bread. Super stoked to give it a whirl. (Pastry Affair- I hope you don't mind me using your picture- it just makes me drool!)
Secondly, The Daily Meal had two articles that tickled my fancy, the first having the tantalizing title "4 Restaurants Where You'll Never, Ever, Get a Table", which goes into ridiculous detail on 4 of the zaniest, most absurd, downright daffy "restaurants" (which seems to be a loose title) from around the world. From a terrifying white water rafting destination to a beauty requirement, if you pass the test, get selected at random from a city of millions, or even survive, you aren't guaranteed to have your tastebuds tickled. A challenge- most certainly!
The second article is merely a categorized list of the 150 Best Bars in America as chosen by The Daily Meal, and while obviously New York and LA dominate, there's a great selection from even the corners of suburbia and the tumbleweeds of Middle America. I for one might prefer a jukebox bar over molecular mixology, but even if you're lookin' to get lucky there's a bar for you!
Lastly, another addiction (Incredible Things) led me to a miraculous discovery of a bottled iced coffee only to dash my dreams by alerting me to its location- Australia! I'm partial to the chilled version of my daily cuppa joe, and the thought of having it potentially ready made at my beck and call was enough to get my synapses doing Jazzercise. That bottled Starbucks chilled junk just doesn't get my mojo going, but until One Tree Coffee is available Stateside, I suppose my cold brewing will have to suffice. Plus, I think we can all agree this is a pretty snazzy looking bottle (courtesy of Incredible Things)
That's all for now- I solemnly swear that I am up to SOME good and won't leave you hanging for another few months.

Visiting Brasserie Cantillon
If you like sour ales, chances are that you've at least heard of Cantillon. While I was in Brussels I had the opportunity to visit the brewery. When you first enter right off the streets you get the feeling that you shouldn't be there. You find yourself in a warehouse type building. And it is somewhat dark and there is the constant drone of machinery in the background.
After your eyes adjust to the light and you acclimate yourself to your new surroundings, you kind of shuffle 10 - 15 yards from the door where you are greeted by an attractive middle aged blond haired woman. She efficiently explains that you have signed up for a self guided tour of the brewery, which upon your completion you are entitled to two free beers. She gives you a quick run down of your stops along the way and sends you stumbling off into the brewery.
Once you find the first stop on the tour you start to realize just how cool the place is. The brewery is somewhat old, but very functional. The immediate charm of the dusty brewery starts to rub off on you. You realize that this place brews ale that is spontaneously fermented, so they really can't risk cleaning the brewery head to toe with bleach, because the brewer wants to attract the microbes that are required to inoculate the brew. Their coolship is beautiful and the barrel room even more striking. And the cobwebs, ah yes, the cobwebs. The brewery is full of cobwebs because as the wort cools overnight in the coolship the brewer believes that the spiders catch errant insects lurking around the brewery, therefore keeping those bugs out of the cooling wort.
Their beers are unmatched in terms of quality. The basic gueze is a blend of aged and young lambic, and more importantly it is incredibly quaffable. The Kriek and Framboise, aged with Cherries and Raspberries respectively are not sweet girly beers. These bad boys pack some sour punch and they finish quite dry. As complex as any wine you've ever had. In short, you've got to try them.
The brewer and owner Jean-Pierre Van Roy was a teacher by training. However, his wife was a Miss Cantillon. And her father who was the previous brewer and proprietor asked Van Roy to take over the brewery or he was going to close it. No real option, he took it over. Below is a picture of me and Jean Pierre.
If you've got the time and your in Brussels and you want to see how authentic Belgian sour ale is produced, this is your place!

Femininity
Basically, what I am going to do is present a very simple idea really with no solution as to whether it is correct and virtuous or incorrect and vicious; however, it is something that should be seriously addressed, which just is not addressed in the current trend of gender neutralization while also remaining politically correct.First, I want to specify gender neutralization. The term does not

Chasing Zebras: The Unofficial Guide to House, M.D.
"I look for zebras because other doctors have ruled out all the horses." Gregory House, M.D.
Last May, I wrote a blog post chronicling appearances of "carcinoid" on the popular show House, M.D. (one of my mom's favorite shows). Recently, I came across this "insider's guide" to House - with a title too good not to include in my blog.
BOOK EXCERPT:
“It is an axiom of medicine: 'when you hear hoofbeats, you think horses, not zebras.' Dr. Gregory House and his elite team of diagnostic fellows chase medicine’s “zebras” — the anomalies, the odd presentations, the diseases so rare that most doctors would not have encountered them in a normal medical practice.
House, M.D. is, itself, a zebra in a herd of horses. It is a rare find of a show blessed with consistently sharp, intelligent writing: densely packed and multifaceted. It features one of the most complex characters ever to have been written for the small screen, Dr. Gregory House, brought to life through Hugh Laurie’s brilliant and nuanced performance."

Zebra Cover: Smithsonian Magazine
A friend of mine texted me the Smithsonian Magazine cover for March 2011. Pretty neat!
After reading the magazine's featured article about the 20,000 plains zebras that wander through Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans - I'm even more convinced that the zebra is the PERFECT mascot for carcinoid survivors, because we share many of the same qualities ...
* Spirited: zebras have a wild spirit that makes them nearly impossible to tame or domesticate;
* Unique: like a human fingerprint, each zebra stripe pattern is identifiably different;
* Resilient: zebras "walk 34-mile round trips every two to four days to get from water to food, to water again, on an endless journey between thirst and hunger"; it's estimated that they travel more than 2,300 miles a year.
To Read the full article in the Smithsonian Magazine: "Nothing Can Stop the Zebra" click HERE.
A few weeks ago, I chaperoned the senior class trip to Six Flags Great Adventure and escaped the 94 degree heat for a while by partaking in the largest drive-thru safari outside of Africa. The 350-acre wildlife preserve has more than 1,200 exotic animals - including zebras of course!
But the Smithsonian article has me thinking - maybe I should take a trip to Africa to see these magnificent creatures, that hold so much meaning for me now, in the wild.

Collective Punishment
This statement immediately reminded me of collective punishments. Through my experience I find that they are most prevalent where children are involved like elementary schools or youth organizations like the Boy Scouts. These bullshit punishments penalize an entire group for the prohibited actions of specific individuals. Simply, individuals who have not violated any rules are disciplined

This reboot of the Hulk gets two stars. Though I did not see either of the two films in the previous Hulk series directed by Ang Lee, I would like to see it now. The reason being, while watching this Hulk a man sitting one seat over from me leaned over with excitement remarking, "This has way more action than the last one." As I just stated, I have not seen Ang Lee's Hulk, but this film did have

Representing Zebras at Relay for Life...
Two hours from now, I will be speaking in front of 300 people at the opening ceremonies of our school's Relay for Life event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Below is my speech; I have to say... I'm really nervous.
Relay for Life Speech
Many of you know me as Ms. Johnston or Ms. J – an English teacher here at PC. Some of you know me as Marlena, a cancer survivor and advocate; but my friends and family know me simply as Mar or MJ, and they have stood by my side this past year as I’ve struggled to balance being both a teacher and a cancer patient. While cancer has not taken over my identity, it certainly has changed it.
When I was first asked to speak at Relay as a cancer survivor, I was honored, humbled and a little baffled as to where to begin. So, I did what any good English teacher would do – and looked up the definition of “survivor” in the dictionary. This is what I found:
Survivor (noun)
1. a person who survives.
Not a particularly useful definition; so I looked up the word “survive”:
To Survive (verb)
1. To continue to live or exist, esp. in spite of danger or hardship
2. To manage to keep going in difficult circumstances
I like this last definition best because that’s what cancer patients do every day – they “manage to keep going” despite getting plucked out of their normal lives and plopped into a foreign land of needles, and survival rates, and doctor appointments, and chemo, and surgeries…
Susan Sontag said: "Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place."
Every cancer patient knows the exact day their obligatory stay in the “kingdom of sick” began… it’s their diagnosis date. The day you get diagnosed with cancer, everything changes. In fact, Lance Armstrong doesn’t even celebrate his birthday anymore; instead, he celebrates October 2nd - the anniversary of his cancer diagnosis.
On April 27th 2010, I was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer and began my own journey into a world which was not only foreign to myself – but to most of the medical profession as well.
Prior to my diagnosis, I had been sick for at least 6 or 7 years – but no one could figure out why. Last year, they found a suspicious looking ovarian cyst, and thought it could be ovarian cancer, which would account for my abdomen pain, weakness and severe nausea; so I had surgery to have it removed.
When I woke up from surgery, my oncologist had a big smile on her face, and told me that they had done an immediate biopsy of the cyst and were 99% sure it wasn’t cancer. She also explained that – strangely - they ended up having to remove my appendix because it looked “deformed” and that I probably had recurring appendicitis, which would explain a lot of my symptoms.
A few days later, I was resting at home when my doctor called: she said, “I have great news Marlena, I just got the biopsy back on your cyst, and you don’t have cancer…let me see if the pathology on the appendix came in yet, I’m sure it’s nothing, just routine” … I waited a few minutes while she checked the computer – and her voice changed as she said “I have to call you back.”
About 15 min later, she called back to tell me that they had found a 3 cm carcinoid tumor in my appendix, and that I would have to have another surgery called a right hemicolectomy to remove half of my colon and about 20 lymph nodes.
I had never heard of carcinoid cancer before… most people haven’t. Only about 11,000 people are diagnosed with carcinoid cancer every year in the US. It’s rare, and it is unlike any other type of cancer out there. It is caused by neuroendocrine tumors, or NETS, that secrete hormones into the system … these tumors aren’t confined to any one specific area in the body – and can develop in the digestive system, liver, pancreas or lungs.
Out of the approximate 11,000 cases of carcinoid cancer reported each year – less than 150 people are diagnosed with the type and stage of appendicenal carcinoid cancer that I have.
I had hit the “unlucky lottery.”
Carcinoid is rarely, if ever, cured – it doesn’t respond to traditional cancer treatments and doesn't ever leave the body…it’s kind of like bread mold, and spreads like little spores, disrupting all of your major systems, including the heart.
There are only a couple of doctors in the country who specialize in treatments – and because most doctors don’t know about carcinoid, an estimated 90% of neuroendocrine tumors are incorrectly diagnosed, and the average patient waits over 5 years for a proper diagnosis.
The ribbon for carcinoid cancer is zebra striped, and zebras are sort of our mascot along with the slogan “if you don’t suspect it, you can’t detect it.” The zebra is to remind doctors: “if you hear hoofbeats, don’t automatically assume it’s a horse – it could be a zebra.”
Over the past year, my role as an educator has grown. I now find myself not only talking about Shakespeare and Dante on a daily basis, but also sharing my story as a carcinoid patient – and advocating the importance of educating the general public - as well as doctors - about this rare, deadly disease.
That’s why events like Relay for Life are so important. It’s a time to share information as well as hope; a place to celebrate those who continue to fight, as well as remember those who fought bravely. Thank you for joining me and everyone else here tonight in helping to make the American Cancer Society’s dream of “more birthdays” a reality.

Politicians
First, I want to make it clear I am not singling out Obama supporters. Nonsense like this happens for all sorts of political elections throughout history and across the globe. The only connection to Barack Obama this really has, is that the images were of Obama supporters. The problem here is not necessarily the candidate (though politicians and political candidates do have a wide array of

Dream
I dream of you and me, inside a pond. We had learned to breathe underwater as we stood together in the bottom. It was blue, moist and chilly as water touched and caressed our skins.I looked up and saw the sun shining upon the surface, with wavelets sparkling as if someone had spilled some floating diamonds on that pond. There were a million tiny fish swimming around us, making us smile as

Good News Abound, Norms and Sierra Nevada Brewery
Great news! Norm's of Vienna is here to stay, as reported by the Washington Post this morning:
"The Fresh Market, which is set to open this summer, issued this statement, and posted it on the “Save Norm’s” Facebook page: “Being responsible and active participants in the community is what The Fresh Market does and is an important part of who we are. As we have learned more about the Vienna community it has become apparent that Norm’s Beer & Wine is an integral part of the fabric of Vienna. We will work with Norm so that he can continue to serve his patrons from his existing location. We look forward to being neighbors with Norm’s Beer & Wine and together serving the residents of Vienna for many years to come.”
I actually was at a going away party this weekend for a Norm's employee, Jeff (he's moving to Cali). I had the opporunity to sit down and ask Norm how things were and he said that things with Fresh Market were on the mend and he hoped to have something final from them soon. At the time I had no idea he meant this soon. Alls well that ends well, I suppose. The Save Norm's Facebook page attracted over 1,700 supporters. Maybe there is something to this Facebook (this is a huge acknowledgement coming from a non-Facebooker).
In other news I read an article today in the Roanoke Times that Christiansburg, VA is currently #2 on Sierra Nevada's list of top locations to build their east coast brewing facility. The current #1 spot is in Blount County Tennesse, about 90 miles south of Knoxville.
"The company began looking for an East Coast site several years ago and narrowed the list from several hundred east of the Mississippi. The Christiansburg site and the Tennessee site were "head and shoulders" above others looked at in terms of quality of life, Manley said"(company spokeman)
The list of things that SN is looking for is refeshing. From a business perspective they would like good quality water and access to rail and shipping. Additionally, and perhaps more important they would like a nice community, low crime rate, good music scene, and closeness to the outdoors. Christiansburg/Blacksburg has got all of those things, that's why I loved going to school there. Maybe there is a homecoming in the works if SN decides to get started in C'burg.
"The new plant, which would include brewing and bottling facilities and a restaurant and brew pub, would employ about 100, from busboys to engineers, Manley said. Proximity to Virginia Tech is a plus, he said. The company often hires students from California State University at Chico for its plant.
The new brewery would produce up to 500,000 barrels of beer a year (a barrel is about 31 gallons), or roughly half what the Chico plant produces."
Last, your boy ordered an all-grain kit from northern brewer. I don't usual brew from kits, I like to come up with the recipes myself, but when I saw that Northern Brewer was offering clone kits in their pro beer series for Surly Brewing Co of Minnesota, I had to buy one. A nice big malty amercan brown ale should make for a good first all grain experience. I'm hoping to squeeze some brewing in on Saturday morning. I'll keep you posted.

A Question
When I was child I used to love traveling by trains. Sitting by the window used to be so much fun, during the day as well as during the night. I used to enjoy looking at the green fields, big piles of hay covered with a clay overcoat, goats and cattle running around in the fields and sometimes, when there was a road parallel to the railway line, I used to look at the traffic and see if

Senior Graduation
Every teacher calls their students their "kids" - and years ago, I purposely decided that my school "kids" would be the center of my life, rather than having biological children of my own. So for me, graduation is kind of what I imagine Mother's Day to be like - I get these heartfelt cards and sweet presents, and my kids cry and hug me as they tell me how much I helped them, and how much I mean to them ... it's pretty amazing. The only problem is - I really miss them already.

Birthday Gifts
Unfortunately I haven't had the time yet to post much about our trip to Amsterdam and Belgium. I feel like I stepped off the plane and landed in a quagmire of work that I'm just starting to tred my way out of.
Now, today is my birthday and my fantastic wife purchased me a 10 gallon all grain brew setup. After partial mashing and extract brewing for the last 5-6 years, I'm finally launching in the world of all grain brew. Can't wait to whip up my first batch! It only gets better from here.
Keep brewing,

Iron Man
I give Iron Man three and a half stars because it starts out very strong, but then slips in the second half. The one problem I have in the beginning is the non-linear element. It seems like ever since Pulp Fiction the non-linear element has been all the rage. The problem is Pulp Fiction had a purpose for the non-linear. Pulp Fiction is really several stories surrounding the same events. If

Love
In several posts I have discussed how friendship and love are some of the highest forms of selfishness not selflessness as people frequently assume. One chooses another as a friend because he values that other more than mere strangers. The reason he values that other more than mere strangers is because the other follows the same moral standards as him. Therefore,

Problems With Education
Everyone recognizes there is a problem with education. It is one of the few topics actually discussed at college. There is the government (meaning how to make it a bigger welfare state), how to protect the environment, why people suck (which includes racism, prejudice, selfishness, all that stuff), and why education sucks. Unfortunately, no one really has the slightest clue why education is poor.
