Is Ridley Scott set to make a new Blade Runner movie?

Here’s a story we weren’t expecting: Ridley Scott, currently hard at work on Prometheus, a film set in the same dark as Alien, could be set to direct a sequel to his seminal 1982 film, Blade Runner.
This is according to a story over on Deadline, where it’s reported that Scott has “committed” to producing and directing a new Blade Runner movie with current rights holders Alcon Entertainment. If true, it’s a piece of news that evokes excitement, alarm and bemusement all at once.
A sci-fi classic, many could argue that Blade Runner works beautifully as a self-contained world, and that any attempt to create a sequel or prequel (it’s not yet clear what form this new film will take) would merely detract from the ground-breaking film Scott made almost thirty years ago.
It’s also worth pointing out that Blade Runner, unlike Alien, wasn’t a hit for Scott when it appeared in 1982, and the money and acclaim only really began to roll in much later - surely, this makes Blade Runner a bit of a one off - an arthouse movie made with mainstream financing that would be almost impossible to replicate.
Then again, Alien and Blade Runner remain among Scott’s very best work to date, so even though we remain skeptical that a belated follow-up could work, we’re quite excited to see what Scott has in store.
It’s worth pointing out, though, that none of this is official as yet - Deadline hasn’t revealed where it got its information from, and we suspect that we won’t have definite confirmation of a Blade Runner 2.0 (or whatever it turns out to be) until after Prometheus is released next year.
