TheWrap (via CinemaBlend) tells us that Ben Foster will be playing John Gotti Jr. in the biopic Gotti: Three Generations. Dominic Cooper was rumored to be considered the part, but, clearly, that didn’t pan out. Instead, we’re getting a much different kind of actor, both in terms of appearance and screen presence.
He’s playing the son of John Gotti, who is portrayed here by John Travolta, and I’m curious how they’ll play off each other onscreen. I have no doubt that he can hold his own, because he’s a talented — if underused — actor; it’s just that the two of them aren’t people I would ever expect to see in a movie together, much less playing father and son. Roles in upcoming movies like Prometheus and Rampart might help Foster get back on track to being a star, as he was roughly five years ago, and I think the same applies to this.
Also in the film is Al Pacino, Kelly Preston, Lindsay Lohan, and Ella Bleu Travolta. We did think that Joe Pesci would be appearing in a major role, but that’s been called into jeopardy (please read that; I swear it’s worth the time). Directed by Barry Levinson, who Foster acted under in Liberty Heights, the movie will begin production early next year, with a release expected for late 2012.
