In a casting move that I don’t think I could have predicted if I tried, EW reports that Laurence Fishburne will be playing Perry White in Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel. A character most famously played by Jackie Cooper in the Christopher Reeve films, and then Frank Langella in Superman Returns, he’s the first African-American actor to have this part.
That, personally, means almost nothing to me, but comic book fanboys aren’t ones to respond well to actors being cast as characters which they don’t resemble. (Remember Donald Glover‘s half-joking bid to play Spider-Man?) The “almost” part comes into play when I just think about the movie itself — it’s interesting to see them try something a little different with a story about one of the most famous fictional characters in history, even if a change like this is minimal and basically irrelevant. I’m glad to continually see that Snyder is trying to cast this thing well, and not simply coast on the fact that this could easily make a lot of money. The cast he’s joining already includes Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Christopher Meloni, and Harry Lennix, and the film will open in June, 14th, 2013.
