I find it pretty hard to believe that Matthew McConaughey and Steven Soderbergh haven’t worked together yet; there’s no specific reason, but something about the two makes me think that they would be a good team. (Soderbergh has worked with Matt Damon and his McConaughey impersonation, though, so that should count for something). They must agree, because Variety has learned that the actor has joined Magic Mike, the upcoming film about male strippers that also stars Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer.

McConaughey will be playing “Dallas, a former exotic dancer who now owns and operates Xquisite, the club where ‘Magic Mike’ works.” The story centers on Tatum‘s character, the aforementioned and titular Magic Mike, who is mentoring Pettyfer‘s 21-year-old dancer; it’s written by Reid Carolin and based on the experiences that Tatum had in the profession, and Pettyfer is playing a version of him.

We’ve recently seen McConaughey get back into the groove of taking on respectable projects after several years of junk, and this is a choice that I would say maintains this new streak. As someone who thinks that he’s a genuine talent in search of a good script and competent director, this makes me thrilled. And the role he’s found seems right; many of his past parts have an undercurrent of sleaziness to them, which a strip club proprietor will almost surely contain. Produced by Nick Wechsler, Gregory Jacobs, Tatum, and Carolin, the movie will begin shooting next month.
